Summary

Suntory has entered into an agreement with the local government in Yamanashi Prefecture to collaborate on developing Japan’s largest 16 MW green hydrogen power system at Suntory Hakushu Distillery and Suntory Minami Alps Hakushu Water Plant by 2025

Activities & Initiatives

The “Yamanashi Model P2G System”*1 that will be installed at Suntory’s Hakushu facilities will produce green hydrogen by electrolyzing water using renewable electricity such as solar power and therefore does not emit any greenhouse gas (GHG) in its production process nor when consumed as a fuel. The green hydrogen produced will not only be used as fuel for heat energy at the company’s Hakushu facilities but are also planned to be utilized in the surrounding communities.

Measures & Targets

Suntory will collaborate with Yamanashi Prefecture on decarbonizing Suntory Hakushu Distillery and Suntory Minami Alps Hakushu Water Plant located in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, by installing the country’s largest 16 megawatt-size “Yamanashi Model Power-to-Gas (P2G) System”* at the company’s Hakushu facilities by 2025. This is part of Suntory Group’s work to meet its 2030 target to halve GHG emissions in its direct operations*3 such as by utilizing green hydrogen and renewable electricity to ultimately achieve net zero GHG emissions across its entire value chain by 2050.

SDG Focus Area(s):

Summary

Suntory will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by procuring UK-grown barley produced using regenerative agriculture practices with the ambition to produce barley with 50% lower GHG emissions within five years.

Activities & Initiatives

The project will start by baselining all crop-related emissions, which will inform an innovative nature-based program of interventions that seek to reduce GHG emissions, enhance soil health and protect water, while maintaining crop performance and grain quality. The quality of the barley grown under the project will be evaluated by Suntory Spirits, Beam Suntory and other group companies, and then will later be examined for its contribution to the group’s global ambition to achieve net zero GHG emissions across the entire value chain by 2050.

Measures & Targets

In collaboration with UK based Malt supplier Muntons Plc (Muntons), sustainable agriculture and supply chain consultancy Future Food Solutions Ltd (FFS), and local barley farmers in the East Anglia region, the project will start production from 2023 with the ambition to produce 50% lower GHG emissions within five years.
