Syracuse University's Institute for Democracy, Journalism & Citizenship
IDJC conducts research, teaching, stakeholder convening and public events and engagement to address polarization, misinformation and other challenges to democratic governance, dissemination of news and civil discourse. This includes studying relationships between polarization and local news and cable news; intersectional areas such as sports and democracy, food and democracy, AI and democracy, global and domestic challenges; and pioneering programs for student and the general public and listening sessions around civics and media literacy

Purpose

Current and emerging challenges to democracy are everyone’s problem and can’t be fixed by elected officials or journalists alone. The more we know about polarization and misinformation, how to distinguish fact from opinion from conspiracy, and how to use conflict resolution skills in our own lives, the better poised we are as a society to repair damaged institutions, develop new ones and protect the freedoms we cherish.
