Mana is committed to addressing the climate crisis by setting an example of how the hospitality industry can—and should—be minimizing negative impact and maximizing positive impact to the local environment and society.
To better understand Mana's contribution to the local environment, we have set parameters that measures our core environmental footprint, specifically scope 1 and 2 emissions. The parameters we measure include: grid electricity usage, LPG (liquified petroleum gas) usage, water usage, waste production (organic and inorganic).
In order to limit these emissions we have implemented eco-technologies that help minimize our environmental impact these include: rainwater harvesting system to not take away more groundwater from Bali, eco-flush toilets and eco-showers in collaboration with Alam Santi to minimize water usage, waste-water gardens to not further pollute Bali's groundwater, solar panels used to power the lights at our establishment, composting station to manage organic/kitchen waste, and using the services Eco-Bali to manage our inorganic waste.
Mana is also beginning to explore ways to better understand its scope 3 emissions. Currently we have put in place operating procedures in order to minimize Mana's scope 3 emissions as much as possible, starting with our procurement SOP.
Through our marketing efforts, we want to educate our target audiences about a regenerative way of living that is exemplified through Mana. We do not apply a marketing strategy that is direct or the "in-your-face" type, however, we apply more indirect messages informing guests that each decision guests make in our kitchen, market, or villas, is contributing positively to the environment and society.
Lastly, we also work to raise the awareness among our staff body. With turnover in a hospitality business, especially in Bali, being quite high, it is essential that the entire staff body is aligned with Mana's sustainability/regenerative mission. Mana holds monthly townhalls that introduces about the global socio-environmental issues, what are the ways Mana is tackling these issues, how the staff are contributing to the solution, and what are some things the staff can do be part of the solution, not the problem.
Beginning in 2024, Mana will measure its scope 1 and 2 emissions by utilizing an environmental dashboard that measures everything from grid electricity usage, LPG (liquified petroleum gas) usage, water usage, to waste production (organic and inorganic). These will be reflected to the global industry standard.
Mana will measure its impact towards guests and staff by conducting surveys to get an understanding of where they stand with the on-going climate crisis.
