Center for Political Accountability
The Center for Political Accountability is an NGO that is leading the effort to bring transparency and accountability to corporate political spending. The Center engages companies to adopt political disclosure and accountability policies, conducts research on company political spending, produces the annual CPA-Zicklin index that benchmarks the Russell 1000 on their political disclosure and accountability policies, produces seminal reports on company political spending, its impact and risks, and developed the CPA-Zicklin Model Code of Conduct for Corporate Political Spending that provides a framework for companies to approach and govern their election-related spending.

Purpose

The mission of the Center for Political Accountability is to bring transparency and accountability to corporate political spending. It works with investors and companies to achieve this.

CPA-Zicklin Model Code of Conduct for Corporate Political Spending

The model code is intended as a guide for companies that seek to:

Be responsible members of society and participants in the democratic process and responsive to the range of stakeholders, in both letter and spirit,

Be recognized for their leadership in aligning corporate integrity and accountability with codified values,

Prudently manage company resources, and

Avoid the increased level of reputational, business and legal risk posed by the seismic shifts in how society engages with and scrutinizes corporations. The risk is exacerbated by the evolution of social media and a resurgence of activism in civil society.

The CPA-Zicklin Index of Corporate Political Disclosure and Accountability

The CPA-Zicklin Index of Corporate Political Disclosure and Accountability is the only measure of electoral spending transparency and accountability among the country’s largest public corporations. Issued annually, it’s produced by the Center for Political Accountability in conjunction with the Zicklin Center for Governance & Business Ethics at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Based on information posted by companies on their websites, the Index measures performance in three areas: disclosure, company political spending decision-making policies, and board oversight and accountability policies.
