Acumen

Founded by Jacqueline Novogratz in 2001, Acumen invests patient capital in social enterprises serving the needs of the poor through innovative, market-based, sustainable solutions that tackle some of the toughest problems of poverty—lack of access to energy, healthcare, education, workforce development, and smallholder farmer livelihoods. Through Acumen Academy, the world’s school for social change, we spread our ethos, principles, and practices to equip the next generation of leaders to make change. Since 2001, Acumen has invested more than $148 million in 156 companies that have impacted over 400 million lives to date. We invest in six regions—East Africa, West Africa, India, Pakistan, Latin America, and the United States. In addition to our investments, Acumen Academy has trained nearly 926 Fellows through our Global and Regional Fellows programs, and educated nearly 1.2 million learners through our free and low-cost online courses.

This report highlights the varied ways that corporations and social enterprises can partner and provides several case studies.  https://acumen.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Acumen-Beyond-Dialogue-Report.pdf

This report, published during the pandemic, focuses on a specific form of collaboration – social sourcing – and provides insights on what social enterprises that are "corporate-ready" look like, with a number of concrete examples and case studies. This work was done in collaboration with the WEF Alliance for Social Entrepreneurs and was based on a survey of 150 social enterprises. As part of our research, we interviewed a number of corporate supply chain and procurement leaders from large companies, who shared both the opportunities and the barriers to social sourcing.

Purpose

Acumen’s mission is to change the way the world tackles poverty by investing in innovative companies, leaders, and ideas. Our vision is a world based on dignity, where every human being has the same opportunity.
