Tobacco Free Portfolios is an accomplished team of medical doctors, ethics experts, and sustainable finance professionals, located in three different key financial markets and actively working across more than twenty countries. Working collaboratively with finance leaders – spanning banking, insurance, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, asset management and rating agencies – the Tobacco Free Portfolios team puts tobacco-free finance on the agenda. Tobacco exclusions are increasingly considered a fundamental step on the journey to integrate sustainability, responsibility and transparency into the fabric of mainstream business. In the process, a new bridge is being built between the health and finance sectors and a novel approach to bring an end to the world’s greatest cause of preventable death, is being embraced.
Purpose
Our vision is for a world free from tobacco – Tobacco Free Portfolios professionally engages with the finance sector to encourage tobacco-free finance, playing a unique role in enabling the finance sector to align with governments, the health sector and the non-government community. Tobacco Free Portfolios is a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to inform, prioritise and advance tobacco-free finance by encouraging financial institutions to reflect on and reconsider commercial relationships with the tobacco industry and thereby aid decisions to exclude tobacco from investment, lending and insurance activities.
Our strategy is to engage with key leaders and influencers across the finance sector. We inform finance
leaders about global tobacco control initiatives and the risks of tobacco investment, and we encourage
tobacco-free finance mandates.
Our approach is one of advocacy and education. We pride ourselves on discretion and do not seek to
accuse or ‘name and shame’ trustees, investors or the finance industry. Instead we work collaboratively
and professionally, so that the industry and its investors can make well-informed decisions.
