Summary

Motorola Solutions will minimize our climate impact by lessening Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 38% by 2027 (from 2016) and maintain a recycling rate of at least 50%.

Motorola Solutions is committed to having a positive impact on the environment and sustainability, and will limit its contribution to average global temperature increases.

Measures & Targets

Motorola Solutions will reduce our global absolute greenhouse gas emissions, Scopes 1 and 2, to 76 kT CO2e by 2027, which represents a 38% reduction compared to our 2016 baseline. For 2021, we have set a goal to maintain our recycling rate to at least 50%. We are also in the process of integrating a new environmental measurement tool to further automate data collection, increase the quality of our data and assist us in creating actionable goals.

We will promote and sustain the use of the Motorola Solutions Technology Advisory Committee, an internal advisory group providing guidance on the solutions we bring to market, with particular focus on inclusivity, transparency, security and fairness.

Activities & Initiatives

Motorola Solutions will promote the responsible use of our technology by proactively assessing and guiding our leadership, product strategy and positioning in complex emerging areas, including artificial intelligence (AI), facial recognition, license plate recognition, and data ethics.

Measures & Targets

In 2020, Motorola Solutions launched the Motorola Solutions Technology Advisory Committee (MTAC), a multidisciplinary group of internal experts who serve as an advisory committee on the technologies we bring to market, with particular focus on our principles of inclusivity, transparency, privacy and fairness. The group provides guidance on the solutions we create, the partnerships we forge and the roadmap into which we invest. We also established a cross-collaborative employee-led advisory group to leverage perspectives from employees from underrepresented groups, enabling us to bring diversity of thought to our use and application of complex technologies like machine learning. This group has provided unique insights that will enable us to build community trust, ensure social responsibility and address cultural considerations for our products and services. Looking forward, MTAC will continue to focus on evaluating the company’s responsible use of technology while expanding employee engagement efforts. Additionally, the committee is developing new materials that will outline best practices and considerations for emerging technologies.

Motorola Solutions is committed to strengthening our diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts by building a more inclusive culture and diverse workplace that promotes diversity of thought, innovation and growth.

Measures & Targets

We will work to ensure DEI is a competitive advantage for Motorola Solutions. This means DEI will be an integrated part of all aspects of the business — from behaviors to structures, systems and everything in between. We will be transparent on DEI metrics to our stakeholders, and we’ll ensure we have fair and equitable talent processes for all employees.  Since setting out on this goal, we’ve taken the following actions:

  • Hired a chief diversity officer
  • Added “Inclusive” as a corporate value
  • Conducted workforce demographic analyses to better understand the demographic composition of our workforce at all levels and trends with hires, promotions and attrition
  • Conducted digital focus groups, surveying more than 4,000 employees to better understand their experiences related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Ongoing efforts to support this goal include:

  • Partnering with organizations such as National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and HBCU Connect (Historically Black Colleges and Universities Student and Alumni Network) build our talent pipeline with more diverse candidates
  • Ensuring our supply chain partners share our DEI philosophies
  • Guiding Foundation grants to underserved groups
  • Prioritizing diversity considerations in the design, testing, marketing, sales and communications of our products and solutions

In 2021, we will continue to invest in programs that help foster an inclusion mindset, such as development programs for high potential female leaders and an unconscious bias curriculum offered through LinkedIn Learning to our global workforce. We will also increase transparency in reporting our DEI metrics by publishing key stats in our 2020 corporate responsibility report and providing quarterly updates to our Board of Directors.

To create safer and equitable communities, our Foundation will prioritize our annual grant funding to first responder & tech/engineering education organizations, committing over 50% to those focused on supporting underrepresented groups by 2022.

Through the Motorola Solutions Foundation, our company is committed to supporting organizations that are creating safer cities and equitable, thriving communities.

Measures & Targets

The Motorola Solutions Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the company, focuses its giving on two key areas to help create safer cities and equitable, thriving communities: first responder programming and technology and engineering education. Within these groups, we prioritize organizations that focus on supporting underrepresented populations. Over the past 10 years, the Foundation has donated $100 million.  In 2020, the majority of the Foundation’s grant funding directly benefited people of color. More specifically, 62% of our technology & engineering education funding directly supported women, and 82% of technology & engineering education funding directly benefited people of color. This funding supported programs from the Society of Women Engineers, the National Association of Women of Law Enforcement Executives, the National Society of Black Engineers, the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement and many other organizations that introduce, educate and inspire underrepresented groups within technology and engineering education and first responder programming.  In 2021, the Foundation will continue to prioritize underrepresented populations, including people of color and females, by committing at least 50% of our annual grant funding in support of these groups.
