Communitas America is a social impact innovation incubator. We are building an entrepreneurial ecosystem primarily made up of BIPOC and women changemakers who are creating inclusive and equitable local economies in historically under-resourced communities in the U.S. Specifically, we aim to build individual, family, and generational wealth through economic independence, create community wealth, raise up local solutions, empower communities, support structural change, remove barriers, and create jobs and economic sustainability. Communitas America is recognized as a New York State certified business incubator for its focus on communities. We provide social entrepreneurship programming through the Communitas Ventures Accelerator (established in 2018 with 175+ entrepreneurs, Cohort 10 started in March 2023) and Heyground Harlem (which opened in March 2023). To date, according to our internal Impact Data Management analysis (compiled from our annual impact survey, program exit survey, and archived conversations with alumni), 80%+ of our program's alumni entrepreneurs are still active in business (69% are women, 84% are BIPOC, and 75% are from the Bronx or Harlem). In addition, 46% are tackling health/well-being/environmental issues, 36% are tackling education issues, and 18% are focused on financial inclusion. The network of program alumni entrepreneurs actively supports one another, and it is common for entrepreneurs to combine visions to create new ventures in partnership. We catalyze an innovation space and a broad network of like-minded peers, partners, and funders who form a community of support, expertise, and resources. Our changemakers are stronger when they work together. They act as a coalition to advocate for themselves and our community's collective impact.
