BLCK VC
Founded in 2017, BLCK VC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that equips Black investors with the access, education, and community they need to accelerate their careers in venture capital (VC). We are dedicated to increasing the representation of Black investors now and for generations to come.   Our mission has three pillars:
  1. Increase the number of Black venture investors at all levels
  2. Advance the careers of those currently in the industry
  3. Provide thought leadership and accurate data on the Black venture capital ecosystem

Purpose

BLCK VC was created to transform venture capital into an inclusive engine for change and close the racial wealth gap by shifting the venture industry's demographics to mirror this nation's diversity. In the short term, we strive to double the percentage of Black investors and Black partners in venture capital to 6 percent and 4 percent, respectively, by 2024.

Over the past few years, venture capital has responded slowly to the call for inclusion. Today, only 3 percent of the VC community consists of Black investors. That’s a missed opportunity. Every investor is a decision-maker with choices that have clear consequences not only on their firm's profits but also on the people who benefit from the products and services in their portfolio companies.

At BLCK VC, we help more Black investors break into the industry, succeed and access capital so that they can write better and bigger checks to the companies that will transform the industries of today and tomorrow. We do this by enhancing our members' knowledge, skills, resources, and networks at every stage of their careers. We’re not only helping Black investors get a seat at the table; we’re also making sure they sit at the head.

What programs does BLCK VC work on?

BLCK VC’s programs are designed to empower, educate and support aspiring and existing Black venture investors. Currently, BLCK VC has three signature programs:

  • Breaking Into Venture: A 9-week program designed to successfully prepare early-career professionals with the tools they need to transition into venture capital at the Analyst, Associate, and Senior Associate levels. The program is segmented into curriculum/programming, individualized mentorship, and project-based learning.
  • Black Venture Institute: This initiative provides education, community, and opportunity for Black operators and executives looking to become angel, scouts, and venture investors.
  • Black Scout Network: The BLCK VC Scout Network was launched in partnership with Lightspeed Venture Partners and Sequoia Capital to empower Black scouts and angel investors with the knowledge, networks, and tools they need to make better investments.

Presently, all our programs are hosted twice per year. We hope to scale the frequency and size of our cohorts to bring more Black investors into the venture capital ecosystem. Other programs under development focus on helping more operators and executives become successful LPs.
